Portrush Weekend Break
The pretty coastal town of Portrush can be found on a peninsular on the north coast of Northern Ireland and is a popular destination among nature lovers. The area boasts a large number of pretty stretches of sand scattered along the coast and this is also one of the main gateways to the dramatic cluster of stones that form the Giant’s Causeway jutting out from the headland. The town is also located conveniently close to the bright lights of Belfast and this makes a great daytrip destination for lovers of big cities.
Things to see and do in Portrush
People who want to get back into the swing of things and unwind for a while should check out Royal Portrush Golf Club. This is one of the world’s best golf link courses and also boasts an excellent clubhouse where visitors can toast their success on the course with a glass or two of local whisky.
Portrush boasts a pretty harbour where visitors can take a stroll on sunny days. A long path leads along the harbour beside the main beach and is lined with a good selection of shops, restaurants and other amenities.
The picturesque Rathlin Island is located just off the coast and ferries run here every day throughout the summer months. Visitors will find several pretty coastal paths to wander along here, while the view across the water to the mainline is simply stunning.
People who have a head for heights should make sure they take the time to cross the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. This traditional bridge is constructed from wooden slats and visitors can gaze between the slats to the chasm that is eighty feet below, while the nearby coastal path offers impressive views of the Scottish Isles as well as along the coast to the nearby town of Rathlin.
Sun worshippers who want to spend the day relaxing on the beach will find plenty of stretches of sand to choose from. One of the most popular sandy spots in the area is Whitepark Bay Beach, which is just a short drive away from Portrush and is backed by dramatic sand dunes, while this is also a great place for wildlife spotting.
People who want to enjoy the stunning natural beauty of Portrush to the full should plan a trip for the summer months. There are plenty of warm and sunny days to be enjoyed in May and September, while temperatures reach their peak from June to August and this is the most popular time of the year to visit the area.
